Just when you all thought you were safe. Just when things started calming down, Google releases another update. What is happening now, is Google is laying the smack down on EMD’s or “exact match domains.”
According to Matt, this will effect less than .6% of English US searches, (which is really a lot) 🙂
There has been nothing released on Google’s blogspot blog or anywhere else as of now.
What is an EMD and why is it relevant? Well, in the past few years, people have been taking a keyword, lets call our keyword “florida seo.” What people would then do is register “floridaseo.com” and Google would give it extra points in their ranking algorithm. For the last few years, you would see quite a few .coms, .orgs etc all taking up the first page for the keyword that you were typing in.
So what does this mean? Well – most Elite Strategies customers are good to go. We never advise people to fall into these short-term schemes. There were a few of them that registered a domain name before hand, but this is not a be all end all for EMD’s – it just means that Google is no longer giving the value or weight to EMD’s that it used to.
If you’ve been doing everything that you should be for the last few months and you have an EMD, then you probably have nothing to worry about. If you have an EMD and you’ve been relying on that and only that to rank in Google, then you should probably look into that.

Update: JUST as we were all leaving work and getting our paychecks on Friday afternoon, someone across the room shouts out “EMD Algorithm update” – to our dismay. A few of us who had their bags in their arms getting ready to leave, just sat back down in submission of this latest announcement.
Almost 5 days later now, it seems that most of us are in the clear. So we made this video:
Elite Strategies post-update statistics:
Kind of boring, we know. I guess we’ve really been doing the right thing!
Then we start receiving emails from people like this:
…In the meantime, edited sent this to me this morning regarding her serps for edited. She is frantic that she has been de-listed or dropped drastically for search terms that have held her on top for so long. She heard there was a new Google “rule” regarding domain names, etc., that she doesn’t understand. I’m certain you do….
Friends and referrals from customers began emailing us every hour. People have been hearing about the update, but no one is really sure what is happening. If you think you have received a penalty, give us a call – let us look into it before you make any moves. We are here to help.
